After we had returned back to the database and did a few more experiments on how to creatively visualize all of this data. We returned back to our idea of creating a zine about mindfulness, focusing on the element of color within your surroundings.

I personally felt that going outside to document the life around us was quite enjoyable. It took me from out of my head and forced me to look at my surroundings. A lot of the worries that were playing on my mind at the time, seem to fade away as I focused on the colors of the flowers around me.

I wanted to take this feeling and find a way to implement it into our artwork for this practice, thus the idea of the color/mindfulness zine.

Revisiting the 4 P's!

People - Anyone who wants to get out and explore, take some time out of their day for some peace. Particularly for those that need to take a break from their doubts and worries

Place - The zine can be taken anywhere! However, the zine does ask for you to go to a body of water at one point, which works well in the Netherlands but could be an issue elsewhere

Plot - A zine that creatives a dialogue between the book and reader and allows them to practice a bit of mindfulness

Purpose - Being present in the moment can do wonders for your health and mind, cause people to calm down, and reduce stress. A little bit of meditation never hurt anybody.
We created a mock-up version of what the zine would look like and thought of different exercises people can take while they are on their walk. We wanted the journey throughout the book to side alongside the walk itself, as if the zine is narrating the whole walk. As you follow this walk, it will also take you back home.
Natalya Balnova, "Principles of Jelly Making", 5"x5"
Guy Debord and Asger Jorn, spread from "Mémoires", artist's book, (1959)
For the design of the zine, we wanted to combine both of our majors of illustration and photography so the final outcome would be more impactful. We also wanted to engage in both mediums to show that data design can be applied to both majors.

Inspired by Balnova, Debord, and Jorn, we wanted this zine to also be something the user could add to and expand on. We want those who have the zine to use it as a starting point, and branch off on their own when they become more accustomed to the idea of practicing mindfulness on a more regular basis.

We were also inspired to include the notion of psychogeography in our zine. Psychogeography is the effect of a geographical location on the emotions and behavior of individuals. Proposed by the theorist Guy Debord in 1955, who was inspired by the French 19th-century poet and writer Charles Baudelaire's concept of the flâneur (an urban wanderer), Debord suggested playful and inventive ways of navigating the urban environment in order to examine its architecture and spaces.

Using the concept of psychogeography, we wanted to experiment a bit with the idea of how different places can make us feel and behave differently, which we have implemented into the zine.
Mock-up of zine
Current overall design of the zine. Left spaces in the zine itself so those who are using it can find in their own responses. Maybe to even reflect on another day.

Backside
The backside functions as a poster, it's main goal is to get people to go on a walk.
It does this by showing the benefits of walking and showing walking as something adventurous.
people using the zine can also make little notes or drawings of their walk by using the line on each page. This would be an easily accessible way for people to use psychogeorgaphy
